Are you Habits Working for You?

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being “Ter”rific), rate yourself in the following 3 areas:

I return calls on time. _____
I am prompt for meetings and appointments. _____
I have good communication between colleagues and staff. _____

If you got triple 10s then good for you. If you got a lesser score, triple good for you; because together we’ll address that.

First, what is the definition of returning calls “on time”? According to research, it’s within 24 hours. This may change as technology does, but for now, this is the standard. However, some people may not be aware of this. Consider noting something in your voice greeting such as “… I return calls between 11 and noon, and 4 and 5”. If your call is after 1 p.m., I may not return your call until the next business day”.  Then, be sure to stick with that plan. Use your mobile phone while away or delegate a return call; even if only to say that you will get back with them and to take a message.

Per meetings and appointments, always strive to arrive early. By doing so you’ll more likely arrive on time. Setting up multiple alerts and reminders helps me.

To improve communication quality with everyone; at work, socially or at home, here’s a technique from my friend Jack Canfield. It really works but it makes you vulnerable and very uncomfortable at first, but I believe once you’ve tried it you’ll use it often. Ask your colleague, staff or family member this. On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate our communication level, with 10 being the best? Then when you get the answer, don’t be offensive, bite your lip and really internalize this so you’ll make modifications where needed. Then the next question is, “How then can I make it a ten”? Take note and take action.

Did you notice that all three habits on this list are in the form of “I am affirmations”?

Consider writing all three on a 3 x 5 card, look at and affirm out loud 3 times daily for at least one week.

I return calls on time.
I am prompt for meetings and appointments.
I have good communication between colleagues and staff.

Then return; there’s more!
